Honorary Lecture

As one of the highlights of ECIO 2010 the CIRSE Foundation is extremely honored to welcome Vincenzo Mazzaferro, MD, to give the Honorary Lecture.

After receiving his medical degree cum laude from the University of Turin, Vincenzo Mazzaferro worked as an army medical officer at the Health Military School of Florence University. In 1987 he received his board certificate in surgery cum laude from the University of Milan where he also certified cum laude as an oncologist in 1994. In the run-up he was a fellow and visiting surgeon at the National Cancer Institute, Milan and the University of Pittsburgh. From 1988 to 1991 he returned to Pittsburgh to teach as an assistant professor of surgery.

From 1992 to 2000 Prof. Mazzaferro was an Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of Liver Transplantation Unit at the Department of Surgery of the National Cancer Institute in Milan. Today he heads the institute’s Gastrointestinal and Hepatopancreatic Surgery and Liver Transplantation Unit.

Besides numerous other awards, Vincenzo Mazzaferro has been honoured with the Milan Ambassador Programme Award and the Landon Foundation-AACR INNOVATOR Award for International Collaboration in 2009.

In addition to authoring and co-authoring more than 130 original investigations he has been an associate editor of the Italian Medical Encyclopedia in 1991, 1999 and 2005. He is a member of the Editorial Board of several renowned journals such as Journal of Hepatology, Annals of Surgery, American Journal of Transplantation and Journal of Surgical Oncology.

Vincenzo Mazzaferro is a member of numerous national and international societies such as the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS), the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) or the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF).
